"It's as if she evaporated straight through the walls." We've found no indication that the locks were tampered with." He took his eyes off the horse and glanced at Teddy and Chuck. It was locked from the outside and its sole window was barred. What's even more disturbing is that we can't tell how she got out of her room. ![]() "The warden and his men and a detail of orderlies spent the night and a good part of the morning scouring the island and every building in the institution. Teddy said, "And you've searched the grounds."Ĭawley took a few seconds to answer, played with a silver bust of a horse on the corner of his desk. To swim north you don't reach land until Newfoundland." "To swim that way, you don't reach land for eleven miles. ![]() With a tilt of his head, Cawley indicated the window behind him. ![]() ![]() Following every little move that Joy made I became so drawn in. The characters are super! They are full of life and full of fun. There is such a flurry of activity that you are immediately swept up in the book. I loved the way Joy was introduced right at the beginning. As the new Principal in town, Joy was such an inspiration. This novel made me realize that one person can make a big difference. The writing is smooth with easy banter that flowed throughout the book, enabling me to read it rather quickly.Ī highly recommendable book by a very good author. She is not the only star in this book, however, as all the protagonists gave this sweet story, a good feel vibe. She has talent, she has style and I found her upbeat character very refreshing. ![]() ![]() She shakes the locals up with her fresh outlook, both professionally and personally. It’s used as a starting point and to set up the main conflict, but most of the book is about Rick having to deal with real life for the first time. ![]() Despite the cover, the trailer and pretty much everything else focussing on the game, it actually features surprisingly little in the book. BUT (and here’s the big but) there’s nothing really standard about this book. Pretty standard, right? Dystopian future with an escapist-type game isn’t exactly breaking new ground. Rick, Daedalus’s son (maybe), has lived most of his life inside the maze, testing it for bugs, running all of the dungeons and wasting time. ![]() Created entirely by a genius called Daedalus, The Maze is basically a MMORPG on steroids. In this future, a virtual reality game called ‘The Maze’ has become popular. Set in said future is a world very clearly divided into the haves and have-nots, with the haves living a life not too dissimilar from our own (albeit completely indoors so… not too dissimilar from our own), and the have-nots living outside in the near-constant acid rain and poisonous atmosphere, surviving on tasteless protein shakes. At first glance it’s your typical dystopian future novel.
